Magnesium for Diabetes Control

Our bodies require magnesium for more than 300 metabolic functions. On of those is regulating blood sugar levels for diabetics. It also supports muscle and nerve function, blood pressure control and even enhances energy levels and may even have antidepressant effects.

Sources for magnesium include green vegetables, peas, beans, soybeans, almonds, cashews, peanut butter, yogurt and whole unrefined grains.

We get low magnesium levels from overactive stress hormones (probably applies to everyone nowadays), or excessive dietary calcium. Seniors are particularly susceptible because of digestive issues.. Other threat factors can come from prescribed drugs, diuretics, antibiotics and medications used to treat cancer

Chia Seed May aid in Diabetes Management

Chia seeds as an addition to the diet for people with diabetes has been shown by research to have benefits by helping blood sugar control, reducing insulin resistance and improving blood lipids. Chia seeds are more popularly know in the U.S. by the chia plants grown on clay pots and referred to as "chia pets".

Chia was cultivated by the Aztecs in pre-Columbian times, and was so valued that it was given as an annual tribute by the people to the rulers. It is still widely used in Mexico and South America, with the seeds ground for nutritious drinks and as a food source.

Chia seeds provide an omega-3 fat known as alpha linolenic acid and a heaping whallop of 10 grams of fiber (wow! My bread is only 4 grams a slice). The fiber in Chia seeds reduce the absorption of carbs into the body to control blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Great source fo chia seeds: Chia Herbal Seeds Capsules

Ground chia seed can be used in baked goods including breads, cakes and biscuits.

Skin is in for Diabetics

Fruits and vegetables put healthful substances in their outermost layers. "Juices generally retain less than 50% of the bioactive compounds found in whole fruit." Luke Howard, PhD, professor of food science at the Univ. of Arkansas recently told Nutrition Action.

Diabetics need an extra boost of nutrition, so eat your apples and cucumbers with the peels on. Its O.K. to peel your bananas though (smile)
