
Chia seeds as an addition to the diet for people with diabetes has been shown by research to have benefits by helping blood sugar control, reducing insulin resistance and improving blood lipids. Chia seeds are more popularly know in the U.S. by the chia plants grown on clay pots and referred to as "chia pets".
Chia was cultivated by the Aztecs in pre-Columbian times, and was so valued that it was given as an annual tribute by the people to the rulers. It is still widely used in Mexico and South America, with the seeds ground for nutritious drinks and as a food source.
Chia seeds provide an omega-3 fat known as alpha linolenic acid and a heaping whallop of 10 grams of fiber (wow! My bread is only 4 grams a slice).
